A
monument to Sri Lanka's struggle for independence, on the east side of the Turf
Club. It's constructed of reinforced concrete and pillared in the style of medieval
Kandyan audience halls. On Feb. 4, 1948, the Duke of Gloucester-on behalf of
the British Crown-formally opened Ceylon's first Parliament here.

International Conference Hall

Memorial International Conference Hall-best known to Colombo residents by its
acronym, 'BMICH'. The huge octagonal building, raised in 1971, was a gift of
the People's Republic of China. The main assembly hall accommodates 1,500 persons,
making it one of the finest convention facilities in South memorating the life
and times of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, assassinated in 1959.
