 Architect by Claude Vasconi & Georges Pencreac'h on 1979. The city's 19th century marketplace was torn down in the 1970s; this cheesy mart took its place. West of the Pompidou Center, the site of the central market of Paris from the 12th century until 1969. The market was subsequently replaced by the Forum Les Halles, a multilevel underground complex featuring a shopping mall, museums, the Paris film library, and a sports center.  An international competition won by Renzo Piano & Richard Rogers and Ove Nyquist Arup, who were Engkishmen of Italian origins, built on 1971-77. Building Type was modern art museum, construction system was high-tech steel and glass.The 'Centre Georges Pompidou', formerly 'Centre Beaubourg'. Massive structural expressionist cast exoskeleton, 'exterior' escalators enclosed in transparent tube.
